one more reason to move from spokane.wa.

.. i,m seriously considering moving back down towards Portland.Or.  Spokane is usually north of the jet stream for 3 or 4 months a year. but  For some reason now Spokane was  north of the jet stream for :  oct, nov, dec, jan, feb, march, april, may and this year june except.for the 28,29 and 30th. The plants will not grow until 55 to 60 degrees and they need 85 to 110 growth degree days..I  believe we had 3 days in june and was hot  july, august,  and half septseptember. That means, we totaled aproximately  78  consecutive growing days.  Not enougth, for corn and tomatoes or me

Well it seems it,s always cold/dry or hot/dry in spokane.. Today it is raining enough to wet the road.. It,s amazing, storm after storm going by spokane.. You can see lightning and hear booms--all 5 miles away...Strangely, we seem to have cool air flowing downriver off of Lake Couer de lane and the mtns... all nice and good in the summer but year around we have a heat bubble over the spokane area...so we have delayed springs... In checking the mean monthy temp and number of "growth degree days" comparing bellingham, portland, and the tri-cities, it is apparent that Spokane is too cold for tomatoes and corn some years.  If we north of the Jet stream,  we enjoy canadian weather,,,

Is spokane, wa. weather colder? Are insect populations collapsing?

This is a letter i sent to WSU ag dept: Gentlemen, my garden is a dis aster. I planted and the plants started then cold weather stopped growth until the last week of june. this does not allow for sufficient growth time 70-90-days? Also I note that the plants are attacked by pests if they,re cold and not growing. I note that spokane is north of the jet stream until late spring >middle of june. The tri cities seem to be on the so side of the jet stream. I passed thru pasco on june16 and their corn was 18 “ high—my corn was 4” high. my peas really suffered and were a maximum 18 “ high when they flowered... What do You have to say? Also, there seems to be no insects in town . I,ve seen 3 bees 1 grasshopper and absolute silence in the evenings. the quail population is way down iv,e only seen a few. No birds, no insects. what gives? Q: Have the number of growth degree days necessary for vegtables to grow and thrive decreased in recent years? I will be 70 on 8/16/2013. I take my lab for a walk-every day- mushroom hunting, fishing, etc and I think something is seriously wrong!
